What the approval tells you
NSI describes NACOSS Gold as a scheme covering the design, installation and maintenance of electronic security systems, including intruder alarms, CCTV and access control. Gold approval combines the relevant technical requirements with a quality-management framework based on ISO 9001. It is therefore useful information when assessing an installation company, alongside the actual proposal for your premises.
The important distinction is between a company's approval and an individual customer's requirements. A logo on a website does not tell you which rooms an alarm will cover, where cameras will look or which monitoring service has been selected. Those details belong in the specification and quotation.
Check the company and its scope
Use NSI's company information and the provider's current certificate to check the business name and approved activities. Trading names and legal names can differ, so make sure you are checking the company that will undertake the work. Where the scope is unclear, ask for an explanation before relying on a broad statement such as approved security installer.

Check its current status and scope when making a procurement decision, especially where your insurer or another party has specified an approval requirement.
Keep insurance questions specific
If an insurer has set conditions, obtain the wording and give it to the installer before a proposal is agreed. Requirements may concern the system or service arrangement as well as the company. Ask the insurer to clarify anything ambiguous rather than assuming an accreditation badge answers every policy question.
Do not choose an alarm solely because you expect an automatic reduction in premiums. That is a separate question for your insurer. The quotation should address the security and operating requirements of the building, while the insurance discussion establishes what applies to the particular policy.
Compare the proposed work
When comparing companies, read the scope as carefully as the total price. Identify the areas included, equipment to be installed, existing parts to be retained and any limitations or dependencies. An apparently similar quotation may cover a different amount of work or a different service after installation.
Ask who will explain normal operation at handover and what information you will receive. For an occupied business, make sure the responsible users can attend. For a home, the controls should be understandable to the household members who will operate them. Approval is relevant, but it does not replace that practical conversation.
Ask separately about monitoring and maintenance
Monitoring and maintenance are not interchangeable. Discuss what each proposed service includes, its continuing cost and the responsibilities retained by the customer. Do not infer a particular response arrangement simply because the installation company holds approval or the system has a communications feature.
For an existing installation, explain any current provider or agreement before a change is planned. Ask what assessment is needed to take over maintenance and whether equipment or records are missing. A clear transition plan is more useful than assuming a new service starts automatically when a quotation is accepted.
Prepare your enquiry
