What should your home alarm protect?
Start with entrances and everyday use
A useful alarm design starts with your property and the way you use it. Tell us about your main entrance, any rear or side access, and rooms that are separated from the main living space. If you have an existing alarm, explain what works well and what you find difficult. This gives our team a practical starting point for discussing the coverage you need.
Your daily routine matters too. You may want to set the alarm when everyone leaves, or discuss protecting selected areas while other rooms remain in use. Let us know about pets, regular visitors and anyone who will need to operate the system. We can then discuss controls and detector arrangements appropriate to your household, rather than treating every home as the same installation.
Wired or wireless: discuss the practical differences
Both the property and the proposed equipment influence the installation approach. Existing wiring, access for cabling and planned refurbishment can affect which options are practical. If you are decorating or extending your home, mention the stage of the work when you enquire so that installation arrangements can be considered alongside it.
Wireless equipment can be worth discussing where new cable routes would be difficult, while suitable existing wiring may be relevant to an upgrade. The right choice depends on the actual system and property. Ask what equipment is included, how it is powered and what routine attention it will need. Your quotation should give you a clear basis for deciding.
Make monitoring part of the conversation
An audible alarm and a monitored system involve different response arrangements. Before choosing, consider who should know about an activation and what you expect to happen next. Tell us if you have particular insurance requirements, and provide the wording from your insurer so it can be considered when discussing the specification.
Monitoring does not mean that every activation automatically results in police attendance. Any response depends on the system, service and applicable arrangements. When comparing proposals, look beyond the headline price. Check the equipment, installation work and any monitoring or maintenance arrangements included. If there are optional items, ask which requirements they address. Let us know about access restrictions or preferred installation dates before booking so we can discuss a workable plan.
After installation, understanding the controls is as important as having the equipment fitted. Your engineer will explain how to use the system. Keep the operating information available to the people who need it and contact us if your requirements change. For existing equipment, tell us the make or model if known and whether you need servicing, changes to coverage or a replacement system.

Arrange for the main user to be available for the explanation of the controls, and raise any questions about setting, unsetting or everyday operation before the engineer leaves. If you need a particular arrangement for a family member, discuss it while the system is being planned.
Keep your quotation and operating information together so you can refer to the agreed equipment and any ongoing services. If your household routine changes, or you alter the layout of the property, ask whether the existing arrangement still suits your needs. A planned extension or a change in how rooms are used can be a useful time to review coverage.
